PUBLIC MARKET

Situated in Largo Glênio Peres, the Public Market of Porto Alegre was open in 1869. In the begging it had a simple architeture, with a square shape and only one floor. In 1910 it was extended and another floor was built. In the 90's it appeared there was a necessity to do a big restauration and a complete renovation. In the year 1997 it was reopened with a modern structure, elevators, escalators and a metal roof. The market is formed by stalls that sell meat, vegetables, fish and all tipical spices from Rio Grande do Sul. In this location there are good restaurants and an excelent ice cream parlor. Around the market there are many political manifestations, as shown in the photo on the right.
