SQUARES
Matriz Square
The Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca Square, better known as Matriz Square, is the
square of the 3 powers are in Porto Alegre, the State, the Justice and the Legislative. The São Pedro Theater is very close to the square
and the Justice
Palace is next door to the theater. In the front of Matriz Square we find the
Piratini Palace, where the state government and the Metropolitan Cathedral(photo)
is located, that has the 2nd biggest "cupula" in the world with 18
metres of diametre. On the right side is the Assembléia Legislativa do Rio Grande
do Sul (Legislative), that has a beatiful sculpture made by Vasco Prado, considered the best sculptorist that has ever lived in Porto Alegre. In the center of
the square there is the Júlio de Castilhos Monument with his positivists theorys:
intelligence, wisdom and experience.
Shiga Square - Opened in 1983, this square was a present given by the
japanese Providence of Shiga, that is considered a sister to Rio Grande do Sul.
It has a "paisagistico" project in japanese style, with falls, bridges
and a wood neewstand.
Alfândega Square

The name was given by the customs that was located next to the square. This square is a calm and green place in the middle of the agitation in the center of Porto Alegre. There are many jacarandas, a trademark of the city, when they flower, the color the square with blue, the people from Porto Alegre know that the bookfair is coming. This bookfair(Feira do Livro) is an important event that has occured for many decades in this same place. The Alfandega Square has many traditional buildings around it: the Comerce Club, where the balls were in the 50's and 60's, the Art Museum of Rio Grande do Sul and the building where the state memorial is located.
